Gold Pendant Necklaces & Charms
Pendants and charms in solid 14K and 18K gold. Sun, moon, snake, clover, horseshoe, bee, octopus, clam, tarot, some diamond pavé, some turquoise, emerald or Tahitian pearl. Most people start with one and add to it over years.
A pendant is the piece a necklace is built around. A charm is smaller, usually collected rather than bought once, and designed to sit alongside others. The distinction matters mostly for how you buy: a pendant is a decision, a charm is the start of a habit. Everything here is made to hang on a solid gold chain. If you are building a group, vary the scale rather than the metal. Three charms of the same size read as a set. Three of different sizes read as yours. Two of the pendants here are compasses, and there are more in the compass collection. For letters and names, see personalization.
Gold Pendant Necklaces
A pendant necklace is a chain with a single piece hanging from it. The pendant carries the design and the chain carries the pendant, which is why the two are sold separately here: most people already own a chain they like, and the ones who do not want to choose it themselves. Pendants here range from small diamond pavé pieces to substantial Georgian medallions. If you are buying pendant and chain together, match the chain gauge to the pendant weight. A heavy pendant on a fine chain stretches the links nearest the bail. The chain collection covers this in more detail.
18K and 14K Gold Pendants
Most of the collection is 18K gold, chosen for pendants where the metal itself is a visible part of the design, like the turquoise enamel sun pendants. The 14K pieces trade some depth of colour for hardness, which matters for something that swings against buttons, zips and phone screens all day. See the full purity breakdown. Both are solid rather than plated, so the bail will not wear through where it meets the chain. That is the single most common failure point in plated pendants, because the bail is under constant friction from the chain moving through it.
Gold Charms and Building a Collection
A charm is smaller than a pendant and usually chosen for what it means rather than how it looks from across a room. The turquoise bee, the diamond pavé octopus, the watermelon bead, the horseshoes: these get bought one at a time, often years apart. Most people add one every year or two, which is the point of them. A charm collection records something, which a single pendant cannot. For grouping charms on one chain, three is the usual comfortable maximum on a fine chain and five on a solid link. Beyond that they crowd each other and the individual pieces stop reading. Vary the size and keep the metal consistent.
What the Motifs Mean
Snake. Renewal and transformation, from the shedding of skin. One of the oldest continuously used symbols in jewelry. Clover. Luck, specifically luck you find rather than luck you are given. Four-leaf clovers are genuinely uncommon in nature, which is where the association comes from. Horseshoe. Protection and good fortune, traditionally hung with the opening upward so the luck does not run out. Moon. Cycles, intuition, and time passing. Often worn to mark something that changed. Bee. Industry and community. A common gift between people who work together or who are related. Heart. The oldest of them, and the least ambiguous. Sun. Vitality and clarity. The tarot Soleil card carries the same reading. Octopus, clam, bug. Not traditional symbols. These are chosen because someone likes them, which is a good enough reason.
Georgian and Antique-Style Pendants
The Georgian period runs from 1714 to 1837. Pieces from it were made entirely by hand, before machine production existed, which is why no two are identical and why surviving examples are scarce. The champagne diamond winged heart and the diamond clam pendant belong to this tradition. Champagne diamonds, which read warm brown rather than colourless, were used more freely in the Georgian era than they are now. For other pieces made once and not repeated, see one of a kind.
Stones and Enamel
Diamonds are set as pavé across a shaped surface, or as single accents. Coloured stones include Sleeping Beauty turquoise, emerald, lapis, green and blue sapphire, London blue topaz, Tahitian and mother of pearl. Enamel is a separate craft from stone setting. Powdered glass is fused to the metal under heat, which produces flat, saturated colour that stone cannot. The turquoise enamel sun pendants and the pink enamel compass use it. Enamel is durable but not indestructible, and a hard knock against a stone surface can chip it.
Pendant and Charm FAQs
What is the difference between a pendant and a charm?
A pendant is the main piece on a necklace and usually worn alone. A charm is smaller, chosen for personal meaning, and designed to sit alongside others on the same chain. The practical difference is how they are bought: a pendant is a single decision, while charms are collected over time. Size is the usual dividing line, though there is no fixed measurement.
Will a pendant fit the chain I already own?
It depends on the bail, which is the loop the chain passes through. Our bails are cut to suit the weight of each pendant rather than made to one standard size, so a heavier pendant has a wider opening. If you are unsure, measure the widest point of your chain and check it against the product page, or ask us before ordering.
How many charms can I wear on one chain?
Three is comfortable on a fine chain and around five on a solid link chain. Beyond that they crowd each other and the individual pieces stop being readable. Varying the size helps more than varying the spacing, and keeping the metal tone consistent is what makes a group look deliberate.
Can I add charms to a collection over time?
Yes, and that is how most people buy them. Charms are made in ongoing designs rather than limited runs, so a piece bought this year can usually be matched later. One-of-a-kind pieces are the exception, since those are made from a single stone and not repeated.
What does a snake pendant symbolise?
Renewal and transformation, from the way a snake sheds its skin and continues. It is one of the oldest symbols in jewelry and appears across Greek, Egyptian and Victorian traditions. It is commonly worn to mark a period of change rather than as a warning or a threat.
What does a horseshoe pendant mean?
Protection and good luck. The tradition holds that a horseshoe should be worn or hung with the opening pointing upward, so the luck it collects does not run out. It is a common gift for someone starting something new.
What is enamel jewelry and how durable is it?
Enamel is powdered glass fused to metal under high heat, which produces a flat, saturated colour that gemstones cannot reproduce. It is durable under normal wear and will not fade, but it is glass, so a hard knock against a stone or metal surface can chip it. Treat an enamel piece the way you would a gemstone rather than a plain gold one.
Do pendants come with a chain?
Pendants and chains are sold separately, since most buyers already own a chain or want to choose their own. Check the individual product page, since a few designs are listed as complete necklaces.
